Planning Commission

The Planning Commission is responsible for developing and recommending a Master Plan and Zoning Ordinance to the Township Board as provided for in the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act, (PA 110 of 2006) and Michigan Planning Enabling Act (PA33 of 2008). It may also investigate and suggest additional ordinances as needed.

Blue Lake Township has adopted a Zoning Ordinance to regulate building construction within the area. If you plan to build a garage, add to your home, construct a deck, or undertake any other type of construction, you must contact the Zoning Administrator for the appropriate permits and regulations.

For waterfront properties, the Zoning Ordinance includes a Greenbelt provision. This restricts activity within 25 feet of the high water line to protect the lake’s health. This buffer zone is intended to prevent runoff and erosion, and should be maintained with trees, shrubs, and native vegetation. Construction is not allowed in this area—except for removable docks and limited tree removal with a permit. Lawns extending to the shoreline are discouraged, as they can contribute to runoff and pollution in the lake.
